Personal Observations
It's really neat that on the 15th anniversary of The Phantom Menace that we didn't just get another Darth Maul figure, we got what is easily (in my opinion) the best one ever made! This guy looks like he just stepped out of the movie screen. It's hard to pick a favourite out of the 5POA figures, as they all look pretty nice, but this Darth Maul just may be the best looking one yet. The face on the character looks a lot like in the movie and is painted brightly, as opposed to the duller paint on the Mission Series Darth Maul from The Clone Wars. The figure is slightly pre-posed, a first in the 5POA line. While I prefer most characters to be in a neutral pose, Darth Maul's ready for action stance looks really good and fits the character. Hopefully there will be a new Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, or really anybody else from Episode I coming soon in the 5POA line so he has someone to duel! Right now, the Battle Droid from the Revenge of the Sith Mission Series set and R2-D2 from the Mission Series are really the only other figures that can work with this figure when creating an Episode I scene. Both of those figures, along with Darth Maul and an older non-5POA Queen Amidala figure were re-released as part of the Episode I Digital Release Commemorative Collection, making for a fairly decent set of figures from The Phantom Menace. This set was really the only way for people to get this Darth Maul as the Saga Legends figure was only released in a limited number of countries. I personally don't consider that Queen Amidala to be part of the 5POA line that we feature on this site, so Darth Maul in this outfit is really the only figure in this line to have appeared only in The Phantom Menace to date. |
